What’s That Smell? 4 Tips For Getting Rid Of The Foul Odors In Your Hot Tub

If your evening soak in the hot tub was cut short by foul odors, it might be time to take evasive action. Foul odors coming from your hot tub mean that something isn’t quite right. Don’t throw in the towel. By following the steps provided below, you’ll be able to identify the cause of the odors and get back to soaking up the hot water in no time at all.

Smell the Cover

Smell the cover. That’s the first thing you should do when your hot tub starts smelling foul. Your cover is exposed to moisture on a regular basis, which means mold, mildew and bacteria can build up in the fibers. If your cover smells foul, give it a thorough cleaning with a bleach and water solution. Allow it to air dry before you place it back on the hot tub. If the cover doesn’t have a foul odor, it’s time to move on to the next step.

Check The pH and Chlorine Levels

If your hot tub gets a lot of use, you should check the pH and chlorine levels on a daily basis. Improper pH or chlorine levels can cause bacteria to build up in the water. When that happens, your water is going to start smelling funky. Adjust the pH and chlorine levels, as needed. If the foul odor persists, you’ll need to move on to the filter.

Change the Filter

All the bacteria, body oils and other contaminants that get deposited in your hot tub will pass through the filter. Over time, the filter can start smelling foul, especially if it’s not changed often enough. If you can’t remember the last time you switched the filter, or you’ve had to super-chlorinate your hot tub to get it back into balance, you should change the filter now.

Start from Scratch

If you’ve tried everything else, but the odor is still present, it might be time to start from scratch. You’ll need to drain your hot tub and wipe down the inside using a solution of 1 gallon of warm water and 2 cups of bleach. Rinse the hot tub thoroughly and refill it. Be sure to adjust the pH and chlorine levels before you use it again.

If the odor coming from your hot tub has you plugging your nose, it might be time to take control of the situation. Use the tips provided above to get rid of the foul odors. Contact a spa store, like Ole’s Pool & Spa, for more help.
